Do I need to install Java to run BSPSource?

It depends on which download package you select:

  • Standard Packages (bspsrc-windows.zip / bspsrc-linux.zip): NO Java installation required. A standalone Java runtime environment (JRE) is already bundled inside the download.
  • JAR Only Package (bspsrc-jar-only.zip): YES, Java required. You must have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or OpenJDK version 24 or newer installed on your machine to execute the jar file.

Step 1

Q. Why does Windows SmartScreen or antivirus block BSPSource?

BSPSource is a free open-source developer tool and is not digitally signed with an expensive commercial code-signing certificate. Windows Defender SmartScreen may show an “Unknown Publisher” warning. This is a false positive. Click “More info” and then select “Run anyway” to launch.

Q. Why does bspsrc.bat open and close immediately (cmd window flashes)?

This typically happens when you try to run bspsrc.bat directly inside the un-extracted .zip file, or when using the Standalone JAR edition without Java installed. Ensure you extract all files from the ZIP archive to a standard folder before launching, or switch to the Windows Bundled JRE package.

Q. Can I run BSPSource on a 32-bit (x86) operating system?

Modern builds of BSPSource (v1.4.0 and newer) require a 64-bit operating system and Java runtime environment due to modern memory heap allocations needed for parsing large Source Engine BSP lump data. 32-bit platforms are no longer supported.

Q. Is there an installer (.exe or .msi) available?

No installer is needed! BSPSource is distributed as a portable standalone package. Simply unzip the file to any directory on your system and launch the script or executable. You can move the folder anywhere without affecting registry entries.
